The Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center (Joint Vocational School District) in Ashland County is one of six Ohio school districts participating in a program designed to produce significant energy conservation savings. The Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) gave its approval at its Nov. 17 meeting to the Ashland County–West Homes Career Center JVSD project along with ones in Eaton Community City (Preble County), Groveport-Madison Local (Franklin County), Marion City (Marion County), Southeastern Local (Clark Count)], and Williamsburg Local (Clermont County) school districts. The projects will be completed under the commission’s energy conservation program, more commonly known as the HB 264 program. The six districts expect to see nearly $751,000 in annual savings through the planned improvements. The Ashland County–West Holmes Career Center project includes the installation of upgrades to lighting and some ventilation-related work. The district estimates $13,191 in annual energy and operational savings. Ashland County–West Holmes Career Center Superintendent Mike McDaniel stated that the district’s school officials recognize the responsibility they have to conserve energy and natural resources. McDaniel further stated that “this project is the third energy conservation project the district has engaged in over the past six years and the benefits to students, staff and community has been clearly evident in the significant saving of energy and dollars.” OSFC Executive Director Richard Hickman said, “The HB 264 program makes it possible for Ohio school districts to take on projects that reduce their energy consumption. The savings generated will allow these six districts to upgrade their facilities and become more energy efficient. Furthermore, the energy savings will cover the cost of the financing used to fund the projects.”
