The New Philadelphia Indoor Percussion Ensemble and Winter Guard Unit, Kaleidoscope, traveled to Miamisburg High School on Sunday, Jan. 31, to compete in their first MEPA (Mid East Performance Association) competition of the season. The percussion ensemble is comprised of 35 students who showcase their musical talents by performing difficult music on various percussion instruments, while at the same time maneuvering through intricate patterns on the floor. New Phila’s percussion ensemble earned first place in their class by outscoring seven other high school groups. Kaleidoscope, New Philadelphia’s Winter Guard unit, is a 14-member unit which combines dance along with flag, rifle and saber routines as they move across the floor in difficult formations. Kaleidoscope placed fifth in their respective class. The Winter Lines will travel to Firestone High School in Akron, on Saturday, Feb. 13, for their next competition. They will host their own competition on Sunday, March 7, in the NPHS gymnasium, beginning at 11 a.m. Twenty different groups will be competing for top honors on that day. Jeff Furbay, the New Philadelphia instrumental Music director who oversees both groups, said, “This season, our home competition will feature the 30th anniversary of Kaleidoscope. We will hopefully be showing some vintage clips of the ensemble throughout history, including a rare video of the 1980 debut season. We hope everyone can come to the show.” Percussion line directors are Nic McCoy, Kyle Mattevi, Audrey Lab, Roman Hershberger and Ryan Zimmerman. Kaleidoscope directors are Erica Yarnell and LeAnne Rummes.
