The College Readiness Transitions Program begins June 21 at The University of Akron Wayne College Holmes County Higher Education Center. This new program teaches beginning college students what to expect upon entering the world of college.

The eight-week program consists of Pre-College Writing Skills and College Math Foundations. Both courses begin June 21 with the writing course starting at 6 p.m. and math following at 7:30. The program includes a college orientation component offering tips on expectations, study strategies and time management. Orientation will be held June 14 and 16, from 6-9 p.m. The Transitions program is funded through an Ohio Skills Bank grant and offered at no cost to GED recipients, nontraditional and first generation students.

According to John Lorson, coordinator of the Holmes County Higher Education Center, “The program should serve as a wonderful follow-up to the consortium’s Next Step program, which is an ongoing effort to raise awareness for ABLE-GED students about continuing into the world of postsecondary education.”

The College Readiness Transitions program is a collaborative effort of Holmes County Higher Education Center, Wayne College Continuing Education and Workforce Development, and the Ashland County West Holmes Career Center’s ABLE-GED program.

Classes will be held at the Holmes County Higher Education Center, 88-B E. Jackson Street, in Millersburg. Call 330-674-2514 or e-mail HolmesCenter@uakron.edu to register.
