Red Cross youth writing contest seeks entries

                        
As part of the Hometown Heroes Campaign of the Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross, four area youth will be honored for their writing and creativity. The writing contest, presented by the Times-Reporter, will feature essays, short stories, poetry and coloring contest. On Thursday, April 8, the winning students will be honored at the Hometown Heroes’ Dinner at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center – Myron Phillips Hall and each will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bonds. The youth writing contest is open to all Carroll, Harrison, and Tuscarawas County students, grades K-12. Grades K-2 will be submitting a coloring sheet that can be obtained by contacting the Red Cross. Entries for grades 3-12 must be original essays, short stories or poetry. Students must be enrolled in Harrison, Carroll or Tuscarawas County, grades K-12, and all entries must be signed by a parent, guardian or teacher, confirming the work is original. All entries must be marked “Hero writing contest.” Deadline for entries is Friday, Feb. 19. Guidelines for grades 3-12 include: entries must be original essays, short stories or poetry; no more than 500 words; and must be typed or handwritten (using blue or black ink). Topics for the contest are as follows: Grades K-2: Hero coloring contest (coloring sheet entry); Grades 3-5: If I were a superhero... (written entry); Grades 6-8: What a hero means to me (written entry); Grades 9-12: Impact of heroes past or present (written entry). “The Red Cross believes that today’s youth will be tomorrow’s heroes and by embracing our local youth we are encouraging acts of heroism for the future.” said Collin Fawcett, Hometown Heroes chair. “These individuals will be the future leaders of our community, and we see it fitting to recognize them for their achievement.” For a writing contest application, coloring sheet or more information, call 330-343-8633, e-mail info@redcross.org or visit www.mlcredcross.org.
