Scholarship recipients announced
The Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival Foundation Inc. (TCIAFFI) is excited to announce the recipients of scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year. Seventeen students will each be awarded a $500 scholarship at the Mayor's Breakfast on Friday, August 10, marking the opening of the 24th annual festival in downtown Dover. The 17 scholarships are valued at $8,500, making a grand total of $97,000 awarded in scholarships since the inception of the festival in 1989.
Congratulations to the following students:
- Amber Birch, a Claymont High graduate who plans on attending Bowling Green State University and majoring in interior design, will be presented a scholarship by JD Byrider. She is the daughter of Rick Birch and Trudi Birch.
- The Pete and Joanie Perazzi Memorial scholarship is being awarded to Derek Spinell. A graduate of New Philadelphia High School, he is attending The Ohio State University majoring in political science. Derek's parents are Charles Spinell and Missy Zickel.
- The Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival is funding six scholarships this year. The first one will go to Michael Bazzoli. This is a second year renewal for Michael. The son of Kevin Bazzoli and Tracy Bazzoli graduated from New Philadelphia in 2011 and is attending Ohio University, majoring in sports management.
- The second scholarship will be presented to Caden Bonar, a graduate of Strasburg High School. The son of Darren and Julie Bonar plans on majoring in biomedical/premed at John Carroll University.
- Also a graduate of Strasburg, Amanda Tango will be receiving the third scholarship. This fall, she will attend The University of Akron. Amanda is the daughter of Eric Tango and Kristin Tango.
- Leah Knecht, of Indian Valley High School, will receive the fourth TCIAFFI scholarship. The daughter of Rodney and Rebecca Knecht, Leah will attend The Ohio State University and major in English.
- The fifth scholarship will go to Derek Yoder. Derek is a graduate of Garaway High School and the son of Daniel and Arvada Yoder. He plans on attending The Ohio State University majoring in Aviation.
- The sixth and final TCIAFFI scholarship will be presented to Lauren Page. She is a graduate of Claymont High School and the daughter of Andy Page and Cathy Page. Lauren will continue her education at the Central Ohio Technical College majoring in diagnostic medical sonography.
- For the second consecutive year, the first of two Dominic and Annina D'Alessio Memorial scholarships will again be awarded to Kara Brooks from Newcomerstown High School. She is attending Kent State University at Tuscarawas pursuing a major in early childhood education. She is the daughter of Mark Brooks and Hanna Perry.
- The second D'Alessio memorial will be presented to Holly Robinson of Indian Valley High School. The daughter of Robert and Christine Robinson will pursue a degree in early childhood education at Kent State University at Tuscarawas.
- Elizabeth Kline, a Tuscarawas Central Catholic graduate, who plans on attending Franciscan University of Steubenville, will be awarded the Alison Petricola honorary scholarship provided by WJER Radio, Gary and Zach Petricola. Elizabeth is the daughter of Mark and Georgianna Kline of Bolivar.
- Another Tuscarawas Central Catholic graduate, Morgan Stilgenbauer, will receive the scholarship sponsored by Hennis Care Centre. Morgan is the daughter of Bob Stilgenbauer and Brenda Stilgenbauer. She plans on attending Walsh University and studying predentistry and chemistry.
- Katie Casimir, of Dover High School, will be presented with the scholarship sponsored by McInturf Reality. Katie will study at The University of Akron and major in early childhood education. She is the daughter of Ed and Sue Casimir.
- The Johnny and Fanny Pace Memorial will be given to Newcomerstown High graduate Kaitlyn Hinds. The daughter of Kevin and Gladys Hinds will major in agribusiness at The Ohio State University.
- Shannon Kincaid, also a graduate of Newcomerstown, will receive the scholarship sponsored by Tony and Georgie Korns of Dover. Shannon will attend Kent State University at Tuscarawas majoring in early childhood education. Her parents are Milo and Martha Kincaid.
- The "Skip" Rondinella memorial scholarship will be presented to Paige Frank, a graduate of New Philadelphia High School. The daughter of Tim Frank and Melinda Frank will pursue a degree in psychology from Kent State University.
- Truck Sales and Service is sponsoring a scholarship to be presented to Ivy Decker. A graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Ivy will attend The Ohio State University to study English. She is the daughter of Donald and Dona Decker.
