Sprowl named state winner in grade 11 Ohio art contest

Indian Valley High School is celebrating an achievement as junior Melody Sprowl has been named the overall state winner in the Ohio Civil Rights Commission’s Martin Luther King Jr. Art Contest for 11th grade. This recognition comes after Sprowl’s artwork stood out among over 2,600 schools that participated in the competition across Ohio.
The contest, which honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., encourages students to reflect on the values of equality, justice and civil rights through artistic expression. Sprowl’s winning piece captured the essence of King’s message of unity and peaceful resistance.
“I wanted my artwork to express hope and unity, two key themes in Dr. King’s vision for America,” Melody said. “Being recognized for this work is such an honor, and it’s a reminder of how powerful art can be in communicating important ideas.”
Sprowl’s art teacher Sara Dittfeld helped guide her through the creative process.
“Melody has always had a passion for art, but she really brought her heart into this project,” Dittfeld said. “It’s been amazing to see her work evolve, and this recognition is so well-deserved. She’s a talented and dedicated student, and I’m incredibly proud of her.”
The Ohio Civil Rights Commission’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Art Contest provides a platform for students across the state to reflect on the ongoing fight for equality and justice. The contest offers an opportunity for young people to engage with King’s legacy and express their thoughts through creativity.
