Staying connected with the community

A healthy, vibrant public school system is one of the keys to the success of any community. But the 550 employees that make up the Wooster City School District can’t achieve their common goal of providing world class academic achievement alone. Community involvement is vital to their success. When Superintendent Michael Tefs took over the reins 18 months ago, one of his first major initiatives was to open a dialog with the community through a series of informal gatherings and a forum to allow community members to learn more about the district, ask questions and express their views on the course the district should follow. The informal coffee and conversation meetings, known as Superintendent’s Coffees, and the School House Gathering community forum, were so successful last school year that Tefs continued the series for the 2009-2010 school year. After two Superintendent’s Coffees in the fall, Tefs will facilitate the second annual School House Gathering Jan. 13, at 7 p.m., in the large group instruction room at Wooster High School. According to Tefs, the format followed for last year’s community forum will be used again this year. Tefs will offer local residents insight on what is occurring within the schools and with district programs, initiatives and the May 2010 operating levy. After this formal presentation, Tefs will open the floor to questions from the audience and listen to feedback from the community. He sees his efforts to stay connected with residents of the district as vital to the continued success of the schools. “Every district resident has an investment in the Wooster City School District,” said Tefs. “We want our residents to know what is happening in their school district as well as provide them an opportunity to ask me questions and share their thoughts.” The effort to stay connected with district residents continues with two additional Superintendent’s Coffees, on Feb. 26, at 9:30 a.m., at Muddy Waters and on April 30, at 9:30 a.m., at the Wooster Inn. During the coffee and conversation gatherings, parents and community members are invited to stop by and informally meet with Tefs to discuss their thoughts regarding what is happening in the district, during a question and answer session that follows a brief presentation by Tefs highlighting some of the district’s events and recent achievements. Tefs has also planned a more formal State of the Schools address for Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., in the large group instruction room at Wooster High School.
