Students recognized at Buckeye Career Center
Buckeye Career Center honored three students as the October Students of the Month. Seniors Mason McKeown and Brooklyn Barker were both nominated by their high school program instructors for exhibiting this month’s core value, which is communication. Mackenzie Brown is this month’s Adult Education Student of the Month.
McKeown, an exercise science and sports medicine student from Indian Valley, is the son of Jerry and Kathleen McKeown. He currently volunteers at the Health Plex, attends church and has been a member of HOSA Future Health Professionals for two years. He competed in the national HOSA competition last school year and plays football and baseball for Indian Valley. He plans to attend the University of Mount Union to major in exercise science and later exercise physiology.
Barker, an early childhood education senior from New Philadelphia, is the daughter of Joe and Lori Barker. She is employed at Taco Bell and enjoys reading, drawing and playing with her animals at home. She is involved in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and received silver medals at both regionals and the state competition last year. After graduation she hopes to become a preschool teacher or attend Kent State University to continue her education in the early childhood field.
Brown is enrolled in Buckeye Career Center’s adult education medical office and billing specialist program. She was encouraged to take the program by her mother, who also took the class and has employment scheduled to begin soon.
“I want to get a good job, hopefully in an emergency room or go back to school for medical coding,” Brown said.
Brown attends church at Sacred Heart and volunteers for Relay for Life and Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a childhood cancer foundation. She is employed by Applebee’s.
Buckeye Career Center honors three students each month at the board of education meeting. All high school nominees also received lunch from Principal Matt Fockler.
