Becoming a teacher was a natural choice for Tyler Cook.

“I’ve always enjoyed learning, helping others and working with kids, so teaching was the perfect fit for me,” said Cook, who teaches third grade at Flat Ridge Elementary.

Cook has a lot of favorite memories from his time as a teacher.

“I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one (favorite memory),” he said. “Teaching has been a very positive experience overall for me.”

When Cook began teaching, he didn’t realize how much support he would receive from multiple groups of people.

“I’m grateful for all of the support I have in this position, whether it be from parents, co-workers (past and present), community members, et cetera,” he said. “It’s more support than I ever imagined I’d have.”

The profession has several rewarding aspects for Cook.

“I really enjoy seeing the growth in my students every year, and I really enjoy seeing them become excited about learning new things,” he said.

The ever-evolving nature of the job presents some challenges.

“Things are constantly changing — new students every year, new curriculum, et cetera,” Cook said. “Changes are also what keeps this job interesting and exciting.”

Cook participated in 4-H when he was a student, showing steers and feeder calves at the Richland County Fair.

When he’s not teaching, Cook enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and being outdoors whenever possible.
