The write stuff; Wayne College honors area writers

                        
High school, college and community writers received awards for their work at The University of Akron Wayne College’s annual Writers Workshop. For 10 years, The University of Akron Wayne College has recognized exceptional writing with its Writing Awards. The competition recognizes students from area high schools, Wayne College students, and community members for writing projects submitted at the end of the fall semester. High school and college writers competed in short story, poetry or personal essay categories; regional writing competitors wrote poetry, short story or nonfiction pieces. The winners in each category received a monetary prize and complimentary registration to the April 17 workshop event. In the high school poetry category, Liz Weber of Smithville High School won first place with “Building a Dream.” Veronica Toth of Medina High School was awarded second place for “Those Sunday Lunches.” Third-place honors went to Paige Serbin of Wadsworth High School for “Beethoven’s Last Symphony.” There were two honorable mentions this year: Katy Major of Highland High School for “Here Comes Baby” and Kaitlin Sherrill of Wadsworth High School for “Gum On Your Shoe.” In the high school short story category, first place went to Amber Frost, who attends Copley High School, for “Death by Love and Paper.” The second-place award went to Theresa Rotuno of Wooster High School for “Curiosity Killed the Cat.” Bailey Miller of Wooster High School took third place with “The Perfect Storm.” Honorable mention went to Morgan Goudy of Smithville High School for “Angel of Darkness.” Emily Votaw of Hiland High School was the first-place winner in the high school personal essay category with “Gentle Moon.” From Wooster High School, Rachel Myers placed second for “The Life of Mr. ?” and Lauren Monsanty, Chippewa High School, received third place for “No One Ever Fails the Swim Test.” In the college poetry division, Darlene Mullet of Doylestown received the first place award for “Robbery.” Jean Alberts of Wooster received second place honors for “Another Please” and also honorable mention for “Jack of the Green.” Nicole Hall of Dalton earned the third-place award for “Aging” and honorable mention for “If I could make a cake of you.” Denise Roth of Orrville received first place for her story, “Sunshine,” in the college short story category. In the college personal essay division, Jean Alberts took first place with “Awake.” Stacy Coblentz of Millersburg won second place with “Obstacles,” and “Fly Fishing: Catching a New Angle” earned Jason Uhl from Orrville the third place award. In the regional awards poetry category, Sue Spirit of West Salem won first place for “Blue Ridge Hiking Paths” and honorable mention for “Butterball Red, A Love Letter.” The second-place award went to Kelly Lohman of North Canton for “Charging Towards Labor Day.” Ryan Mohr of Shreve took third place with “Pollack’s No. 5.” In the regional awards short story category, Linda Beer of Medina was the first-place winner with “A Change of Luck.” Jennifer L. Smith from Doylestown was awarded second place for “Autumn.” Third-place honors went to Carol Vaupel of Canton for “Trick or Treat.” Two honorable mentions were awarded in this category: Caroline Totten from Canton for “The Secret of Success” and Lisa Van Gaasbeek from Canal Fulton for “Have a Crabby Christmas.” Becky Soehnlen of Beach City was the first-place winner in the regional nonfiction category with “Barn as Teacher.” Melinda S. Neuhauser of Burbank placed second with “True as Destiny,” and Sue Messino of Cambridge received third place for “Rawleigh’s Lesson.”
