As the first day of classes quickly approaches, Kent State University at Tuscarawas is busy enhancing student services, broadening campus life opportunities and enrolling new students. “Admissions for new students will be accepted throughout the month of August,” said Laurie Donley, director of enrollment and student services. “This is a time when adult students are thinking about college to increase their skills and employability, and when recent high school graduates are looking for an affordable college close to home. Some of our new admissions are individuals returning to college after stopping out, as well as students who are transferring here from other universities.” Kent State Tuscarawas has experienced record breaking enrollment growth for the past six years. To accommodate the increased student body and assist with student success, Kent State Tuscarawas has implemented several new initiatives. “We’re constantly adding programs and initiatives in order to enhance academic and student life,” said John Highman, enrollment management and student services advisor. “From an academic standpoint, my position is brand new. One of my major roles is to help students with non-course specific academic skills. For example, I work with students to help them improve their studying, test taking and note taking skills. This service was added last year to supplement existing course specific services such as the math lab, writing center and course tutors.” Across the eight-campus university system, Kent State has developed a new Graduation Planning System (GPS) which allows students to create a Student Educational Plan (SEP). The SEP is essentially a personalized individual academic plan that fits each student’s individual academic needs so they know their path to graduation. Highman also serves as an advisor to the Student Activities Council (SAC). “From a campus life standpoint, student clubs and organizations continue to expand. Last year alone we added four new clubs,” Highman commented. Under his direction and that of co-advisor Shannon Bailey, student clubs and organizations now total 17 and SAC sponsored activities are projected to include 18 major events during the 2011-2012 academic year. Fall semester classes begin August 29 at Kent State Tuscarawas. For more information, call the office of admissions at 330-339-3391 or visit http://www.tusc.kent.edu. Kent State Tuscarawas offers 11 bachelor’s degrees and 18 associate degrees. The campus is located at 330 University Dr. NE in New Philadelphia.
