Buckeye Career Center senior Cameron Thomakos has been accepted to attend The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina.

Thomakos, 17 of New Philadelphia, is enrolled in law enforcement at BCC and attends from Tuscarawas Central Catholic. He applied in September and received his acceptance letter this week.

“They say it’s four years of misery for a lifetime of rewards. So you go there, and whether you go into the military or not, you’re going to leave as an incredibly well-rounded individual,” Thomakos said.

Thomakos said he originally wanted to be a law enforcement officer when he began at Buckeye his junior year, but his thinking switched to the military at the end of his junior year.

“Being in law enforcement showed me I just want to be somewhere that I can stand with honor,” Thomakos said.

Thomakos credited his mother for initially mentioning The Citadel, which led him to research the idea further. After talking with friends and family members, he visited the campus in October and eventually submitted his application.

Thomakos plans to major in criminal justice and apply for the NROTC Marine Corps scholarship. He has hopes of eventually becoming a United States Marine Corps officer or graduating as a civilian and obtaining a career in federal law enforcement.

Thomakos is the son of Steven and Elizabeth Thomakos of New Philadelphia.
