Scott Vaughn enjoys working with students and being active.

Becoming a teacher allowed him to mesh two of his passions.

“I also coach, so (becoming a teacher) all seemed like a pretty natural fit,” said Vaughn, who teaches physical education at West Holmes Middle School and is the high school wrestling head coach. “I can’t imagine doing anything else. I have the opportunity to have students for all three years in middle school. I get to know them pretty well. I also enjoy seeing them succeed as they get older. We have an awesome staff at the middle school, and I really enjoy the relationships we’ve built.”

Vaughn said he doesn’t have a specific teaching memory that stands out more than others, but he loves helping his students learn to be active and seeing how that changes their lives.

“It is so important for them to be active mentally and physically,” he said. “Teachers have the potential to have an awesome impact on lives.”

Vaughn likes the challenge of finding a way to reach each of his students.

“They are very unique,” he said. “Every student learns a little bit differently, and I enjoy trying to crack the code on each student. Once you find a way to reach and help them, it’s very rewarding.”

Vaughn is a West Holmes alum, participating in wrestling, football and baseball while in high school. He qualified for the state wrestling tournament three times, placing sixth and second. He wrestled in college at Mount Union, where he was an All-American after placing sixth at nationals.

Teaching and coaching keep Vaughn busy, but he enjoys hanging out with and going on vacations/getaways with his family when he has downtime.

“I am also an avid hunter,” he said. “I love watching animals, learning how they live and their routines.”

“Teacher Spotlight” is a feature on a teacher in the East Holmes or West Holmes school districts.
