The Wayne County Schools Career Center Marie Chenevey Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 28 members in a candlelight ceremony recently. They join six seniors who were inducted last year. Principal Paul Brockett welcomed the students, their families and friends. “Most ceremonies at this time of year celebrate past accomplishments,” he said. “They focus on a trait of the student, being an athlete, scholar, or participation in a competitive event. This ceremony has a different purpose. These students have identified themselves as leaders. We are celebrating their future successes. They have incredible abilities and outstanding personal characteristics of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. This ceremony represents a lifetime commitment to these ideals. They have followed these principles, and the principles will continue to guide their lives.” NHS adviser Jim Harlan introduced the faculty council which selected the students, including Michelle Bower, Elizabeth Miller, Andy Nicholson, Jill Parker, and Shelly Perry. The honored students make up the top four percent of all students attending the career center, Harlan said. “They are an impressive group of young people who are worthy of recognition.” Four seniors who were inducted last year spoke about scholarship, service, leadership, and character. They were Andrew Forrer of Dalton, Heidi Fought of Triway, Andrea Stahl of Norwayne, and Amy Miller of Dalton. Parker presented certificates and membership cards to the juniors, and Perry and Elizabeth Miller presented the certificates, membership cards, pins, and cords for graduation to the seniors, and pins and cords to the seniors inducted last year. Perry commended Harlan for more than 10 years of working as National Honor Society adviser. Marie Chenevey set up the program, and Harlan was on the faculty council. When Chenevey retired, Harlan became club adviser. “Our country is facing a time when leadership and good leaders are very much in need,” Harlan said. “More than ever, we need young people like those inducted tonight to take important roles in our families, schools, governments, communities, and businesses.” Lynn Moomaw, director of operations, led the NHS members in the National Honor Society pledge. A cookies and punch reception followed the ceremony. Senior members are: Ashley Bellamy of Waynedale, Forrer, Fought, Amy Miller, Michelle Rickey of Norwayne, and Stahl.
