Cameron Rabatin, a Waynedale High School sophomore, was chosen to sing in a national choir March 19-22 in downtown Dallas, Texas.

Daniel Mylott, his choir director at Waynedale, sponsored Cameron’s audition and served as a chaperone for the trip, and Cameron’s dad, Joe Rabatin, also went along.

“The American Choral Directors Association National Honor Choirs are extremely competitive to be accepted into, and I am so proud of Cameron for his hard work," Mylott said. "Cameron was the only student in the state of Ohio to be accepted to the Tenor-Bass National Honor Choir. Out of the four total ACDA Honor Choirs, Cameron was one of three total students accepted from Ohio."

Mylott first learned about the American Choral Directors Association Honor Choirs in 2021 from a choral colleague.

“It sounded like an amazing experience for my students, so I started to share information about this opportunity with my students during the 2022-23 school year," Mylott said. "Since then, many of my students have auditioned for these groups. Two Waynedale students were admitted to the 2023 ACDA National Honor Choir in Cincinnati, five were accepted to the Midwest ACDA Regional Honor Choirs in Omaha, and Cameron was accepted to the 2025 ACDA Tenor-Bass Honor Choir."

Around 300 students in grades 8-10 from all across America were in the Tenor-Bass National Honor Choir. The final concert was held in Meyerson Symphony Center in downtown Dallas.

Cameron started practicing the songs in January.

“The music we performed was difficult, being from all over the world and in different languages," he said. "We had rigorous pronunciation training and worked relentlessly on perfecting our performance."

Cameron would like to become an English teacher and teach musical theater.

“Music is something that gives me a lot of enjoyment in life, and I have made so many connections, memories and lifelong friendships through theater, so I hope to be able to foster my experiences for students in the future," he said. "It was an awesome experience, an event that gave me some valuable knowledge and experience for me to apply in my choir classes and theater."

Joe Rabatin is thankful for Mylott's role in his son's life.

“Mr. Mylott is an amazing choir director and music mentor for Cameron," he said. "I appreciate his energy and how he inspires his students. I really enjoy watching Cameron sing. He was very excited for this opportunity, and it showed during the performance. The event was amazing. I would encourage other students in the future to try out."
