WCS Career Center to host Community Appreciation Day

The Wayne County Schools Career Center will host its Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 15, from noon to 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event. Career center staff members are planning a wide variety of activities for the community, with lots for children to do. Alumni are especially invited to see the changes in the building since the three-year renovation project is now complete.
The Career-Tech labs will be open for tours and will feature many activities, including a pet costume contest in Animal Care, a kiddie tractor pull in Ag Mechanics, face painting and a safety course in Early Childhood Education, cookie decorating in Culinary Arts, blood pressures, glucose, and hemoglobin screenings in health programs, and skill demonstrations in many other labs. Landscape and Plant Technologies will be selling fall mums, and student organizations will offer snacks as fundraisers.
The SkillsUSA Car Show will be on the front lawn from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All makes, models, and years of cars, trucks, and motorcycles are welcome. The show will be held rain or shine, with registration for car show entrants from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and trophies at 3 p.m. Proceeds will fund SkillsUSA contests and activities. Dash plaques will be given to the first 125 to register, and trophies will be awarded to more than 30 vehicles, as well as best of show.
On the front lawn will be various safety vehicles, including fire trucks and police cars. A petting area will feature alpacas, as veterinary assisting is an option for students in health and animal care programs.
The new Adult Education building will also be open, with information on full-time programs, short-term classes, online courses, and customized business and industrial training.
Career center culinary arts and hospitality students will serve lunch complete with Smith Dairy ice cream and Smuckers ice cream toppings. The Ohio State University football game vs. the California Golden Bears will be shown on screens inside the school commons.
The last Community Appreciation Day was in 2008, before the building renovation began. The Wayne County Joint Vocational School opened in the fall of 1969, and the building went through a three-year entire building renovation starting in 2009 thanks to support from local voters and matching money from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission.
The career center thanks Wayne County voters, businesses, and industries for supporting career and technical education for both high school and adult students for the past 43 years.
