WHS student musicians present annual winter concert
The community had the opportunity to hear the nearly 200 instrumental music students that comprise the Wooster High School band program in a concert setting for the first time this year when the music department presented its annual winter concert Jan. 10 in the Wooster High School Performing Arts Center.
The most recent addition to the band program, the members of the Class of 2015, took the stage first.
The Freshman Band, which performs under the direction of Dan Adams, presented three selections, including William Himes whimsical 2004 composition entitled Thingamajig, Robert Sheldons Gently Touch the Sky, and Andrew Balents Summerset Holiday.
Following the Freshman Band was the Concert Band, which performs under the direction of Doug Bennett. The 63-member band performed Richard Saucedos Triumphant Fanfare, followed by Joseph Kreines Air From County Derry, and Michael Sweeneys rousing Rumble on The High Plaines.
In the finale of the concert the Symphonic Band performed four challenging marches under the direction of Dan Adams, including Gustav Holsts Moorside March, Morton Goulds American Salute, Jack Mouses Plainsmen, and Edwin Bagleys iconic National Emblem March.
With the winter concert behind them, the members of the band will now turn their attention to two key upcoming events – the Adjudicated Event in March and a performance at Disney World in Florida in April.
To support the band and orchestras trip to Florida and other travel opportunities available to students in the choir, band and orchestra, Wooster High School student musicians are taking part in the annual Wooster High School Music Parents Association Citrus Sale. Anyone who wishes to purchase oranges and grapefruit may do so through Jan. 24 by contacting any member of the Wooster High School band, orchestra or choir.
