Winners chosen for three Tuscarawas Retired Teachers’ Association scholarships

                        
The Tuscarawas Retired Teachers’ Association gave three scholarships this year, a $1,000 scholarship and two worth $500. The winner of the $1,000 scholarship is Zachary Denham, son of Kimberly and Pete Kavadas. First in his class with a 4.4 grade average of 211 seniors at New Philadelphia High School, Denham has been extremely active in both school and community activities. Some of them are as follows: Science Club president, Key Club vice president, National Honor Society, member of the academic challenge team, Cyber Club, student council, and Leadership Academy participant. He’s earned letters in football, basketball, and tennis and in addition earned the silver racquet award in tennis, the Great American Rivalry Series Student-Athlete award in football, and the Silver scholarship certificate in basketball. In the community, he serves as a mentor and leader in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. He also is or has been, a volunteer with the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Special Olympics, First Day Festival, an area nursing home mentor for families, and with the Traveling Vietnam War Memorial team. He also participated in the National Youth Forum on Medicine and was competitively chosen from Ohio’s top high school students to attend the prestigious W. Essex School for the gifted in Columbus. He will attend The Ohio State University. Also from New Philadelphia High School and winner of a $500 scholarship is Scott Mizer, son of Leonard and Kathleen Mizer. A member of the National Honor Society and the first place ECOL winning academic challenge team, Mizer is also in the Cyber Club and Science Olympiad program. He has worked at numerous programs at Broadway Methodist Church as a church youth group member and has participated in mission trips to Youngstown and South Carolina. He plans to study computer technology at Kent State Tuscarawas University. The other $500 scholarship winner is Rachel McKeever, daughter of Steve and Helen McKeever. An honor student at Dover High School, McKeever is co-editor in chief of the Dover High Crimsonian. She has been a member of Key Club, a scholar athlete, one of the top eight track and field awards in the state of Ohio, and has twice been Dover’s student athlete of the month. She is also a varsity letterman on the gymnastic team. She has worked for the Dover Kiwanis Pancake breakfast, as a Share-A-Christmas volunteer, and a Salvation Army bell ringer. For the past four years she has been a coach for smaller children at Canal Fulton and has been a full-time baby sitter. She plans to attend Otterbein College. To be eligible for these scholarships, the applicant must be a child, grandchild, or first generation niece/nephew of an active or deceased while active member of the Tuscarawas Chapter of the Retired Teachers’ Association. The selection is then based on a point system according to scholarship, school activities, and community service.
