Students from 18 elementary schools attended the Young Authors Conference Friday, May 9 at JIMs Place in New Philadelphia. The 162 students representing their districts came from Carrollton, Dover, Garaway, Harrison Hills, Indian Valley, New Philadelphia, Strasburg-Franklin Local and Immaculate Conception. Author Paul Orshoski spoke to fourth and fifth grade students, shared his books and answered student questions. Local illustrator Greg Scott taught the students the basics of illustration. The students left with a number of great illustrations. The East Central Ohio Educational Service Center’s technology department taught the students digital storytelling using the iPad application Toontastic. Before coming to the conference, each student wrote their own book. The books could be in any format and about any subject. The New Philadelphia Tuscarawas County Public Library will be displaying some of the books in their children’s department.
