Harstines to celebrate golden anniversary
John S. and Judy K. Harstine will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 20 with an open house at the Shanesville Lutheran Church in Sugarcreek from 2-5 p.m. The church is located on the southwest corner of state routes 39 and 93.
The former Judy Peterman and John Sam Harstine married on Sept. 18, 1965, in the Shanesville Lutheran Church by the Rev. Walter E. Weber. Mary Sue Schlegel of Sugarcreek was the organist.
Judy Harstine is the daughter of the late Ronald and Nora (Burkholder) Peterman of Shanesville (Sugarcreek). Ronald Peterman was a kiln fireman for the Shepfer & Moomaw Brick Company of Sugarcreek for 30 years.
Sam Harstine is the son of Ruth (Wilcoxon) Harstine, who resides at Park Village Assisted Living, and the late Carl Harstine of Dover. Carl Harstine was a veteran of World War II who served in the Battle of the Bulge and was a dairy farmer on a farm near Dundee for most of his adult life.
Sam and Judy Harstine are the parents of two adopted children, a son, David Samuel, of the home and a daughter, Annette Kay, who was deceased at age 16 in 1996 from an auto accident, which was caused by a drunk driver. They have two grandchildren, Tyler Groh of New Philadelphia and Kristen Harstine, also of the home. Their much-loved K-9 companions, Holly and Diamond, complete their household.
Judy Harstine retired from the Belden Brick Company of Sugarcreek in 2010 as Plant 4 (Finzer Plant) office manager with a total of 25 years of service. She is a 1961 graduate of Garaway High School and attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, for one year. Judy has dedicated her life to serving her God as a member of the Shanesville Lutheran Church since her confirmation on April 14, 1957. She presently serves as the church financial secretary, parish newsletter editor and several other committees. Judy served as co-chairperson of the Shanesville Bicentennial planning committee in 2014.
Sam Harstine is a 1961 graduate of Dover High School. He retired from Joy Manufacturing/Howden-Buffalo Fan Company of New Philadelphia in 2008 after 46 years as a machinist. He has served on the Shanesville Lutheran Church council on various occasions and has been a member of the church choir since 1977. Sam Harstine has been active as a member and leader in the Boy Scouts of America for 35 years. He recently earned his doctorate from the college of commissioner science from the BSA. He serves as a leader for Troop 86 from St. Johns United Church of Christ at Dover.

A $500 scholarship is presented annually to a graduating senior member of the Tuscarawas County Junior Fortnightly Music Club and/or student of the Ohio Music Teachers Association.
