by teristein The impact of the Mineral City Nicole Donant (MCND) library continues to grow eight years after the library opened in the village. The library has something for everyone and many adults use the library, which is complete with a section of books in large print. “It’s a family library,” said Linda Donant, Nicole’s mother. “I think when we first started people thought it would be a children’s library.” New improvements completed or in the works will add even more for the community to enjoy. Matt Moore of MoorePC, who volunteers his time to keep the library’s computers up and running, noted that all six computers for patron use will be replaced this year along with one or two new computers for the volunteer staff to use and an upgrade to the server. Wi-fi was installed at the library at the end of 2012. “A lot of people have been using it,” said Moore. The library also has a flagpole due to the efforts of Chris Vermillion, a local Eagle Scout, who completed a project to place a flagpole that had been donated years ago. Three $500 scholarships were awarded this year, bringing the total of scholarships given in the past seven years to more than $9,000. “We are proud of it and excited that we get to help a lot of kids get their education,” said Linda Donant. “Our third scholarship was given in memory of Richard Moody, Nicole’s grandfather, who volunteered much of his talent to the success of the library.” This year’s scholarship winners were Rachel Homan, Madison Montgomery and Kelsey Easterday. Kelsey, the daughter of Robert Easterday and Shawn Murphy, plans to attend the Paul Mitchell School in Woodbridge, Va., after excelling in the field of cosmetology at Buckeye Career Center. Kelsey has also been involved with the MCND library, volunteering for many of their special events. Madison, daughter of Mark and Kimberly Montgomery, loves to work with animals and plans to further her education at The Ohio State University with a degree in animal science. She was also the 2013 Valedictorian at Tuscarawas Valley High School, a member of the National Honor Society, Interact Club and Red Cross Club. Rachel, daughter of David and Colleen Friend, plans to pursue a degree in nursing at Kent State University Tuscarawas. She was a member of the Interact Club, the Red Cross Club and a volunteer with Huff Run Watershed’s Environmental Explorer’s Club. She’s been active in her church with youth group and vacation Bible school. Because of her involvement with softball and a tournament game, Rachel was unable to attend to receive her award; her grandmother, Janet Summers, accepted in her place. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the library and more are always needed. “Everybody has a gift to bring, that’s what’s so special,” said Mary Alice Biclawski, who has volunteered at the library for several years. Mary Alice has a wealth of tutoring experience, having followed her military spouse around the world and working with students and teachers in Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Spain and Wales. She works with some children at the MCND library tutoring them on their schoolwork. “Any schoolwork that needs to be done, we just sit down and work on it. Many kids just need some extra one-on-one time.” “It’s a wonderful place for the local kids to come and grow,” she said of the library.
