The Tuscarawas County Public Librarys main library will offer two genealogy research classes on Saturday, July 25.
There is something that is fascinating about uncovering our family histories, Gina Merrill, reference assistant, said. The classes are perfect for those who are just beginning to conduct research or those who want to learn more about the Ancestry Library database that is available at the library.
Merrill said individuals can attend just one session on Saturday, July 25 or they can plan to make a day of it and attend both the morning and the afternoon sessions.
Classes offered are Beginning Genealogy Websites from 10-11:30 a.m. and Ancestry Library for Beginners from 1:30-3 p.m. Registration is required for the free classes.
Attendees will learn how to search for their family records in the census, military, immigration and vital record sections of Ancestry Library. They will also learn about genealogy research websites like Find a Grave and Heritage Quest.
In addition to these classes, the Tuscarawas County Public Library hosts a monthly Genealogy Club, which Merrill facilitates. Meetings may include guest speakers, research evenings or after-hour lock-ins. New members are always welcome. The July Genealogy Club will host a Research Evening on July 27 from 6:30-8 p.m.
The Genealogy Club is a great way to meet other people who are also conducting family history research, Merrill said. Members learn a lot from one another just by sharing their own research tips and experiences.
Participants in the genealogy club events can take advantage of free copying and printing of materials, and during after-hour lock-in sessions, participants have exclusive use of the librarys computers, complete collection of the local newspaper on microfilm, genealogy and local history collections, as well as extended computer time on genealogy databases.
To register for the genealogy classes or the upcoming Genealogy Club meeting, call the library at 330-364-4474, ext. 101. To learn more about the county librarys program offerings, visit www.tusclibrary.org.
