A culture of caring: The heart of Holmes community

Letter to the Editor,

The culture of caring in our schools and in our community, it moves the heart — as what I observed the other morning while waiting on a bus to pick up a child.

The mother had walked the lane from their house. As she escorted her daughter to the end of their lane, there was caring tenderness there, and with her daughter on the bus and the bus leaving, the mother waved a gentle wave of love as the bus departed. What a moving moment. It was family. It was love. It was our community showcasing what makes our community great.

What better way to send off a child to school, children outfitted in their special specialness in their home — best preparation to face the challenges of yet another school day, with a morning heart, as my late wife often would say in her prayers. That morning send-off was a beautiful moment in my day.

And then to see this culture of caring played out at Berlin Elementary School as Principal Darren Blockinger greeted the children as mothers brought them to school, greeting mothers, greeting children arriving in their school best, fresh and clean and well-dressed, a fresh start to a new day with another welcome awaiting them when they entered their classrooms — an atmosphere of caring. It sets us apart.

And when death comes, we drop what we are doing, and we offer our help, our condolences, our prayers and simply our bodily presence to show we care and our hearts are bowed low.

Shows our common humanity.

It's our light to the world.
