All-Star wrestlers come away with winning record
One word stuck out when Holmes Area Wrestling Club volunteer coach Jarret Mathie was asked how the All-Star wrestlers performed in their first action of the season.
“Impressive.”
The All-Star wrestlers were certainly that, posting an overall 32-23-3 mark when the Ohio Youth Wrestling Association Mid-Ohio Division kicked off the All-Star match weekends portion of the schedule Sunday, Dec. 2 at Orrville High School.
“The kids were tough,” Mathie said. “They never quit wrestling, and that’s a great thing. For our first competition to come away with a 32-23-3 record as a team is impressive. The team has been putting in good work so far at practice, so these results are not a shock to me. They have earned it. Overall, I felt we wrestled pretty well.”
Clint Burgett (sixth grade) finished unbeaten at 3-0. Bronson Taylor (fourth), third graders Brody Shriver and Tevin Shaffer, second graders Carter Boals, Tate McCluggage, Jordan Vaughn and Kannon Roberts and first grader Andrew Tuitama all finished at 2-0.
Fourth grader Clay Leyda went 2-0-1, while classmates Everett Tuitama and Lane Skolmutch went 1-0-1.
“Just as we have every other year during our first competitive matches, a few things jump out to us we need continued work on,” Mathie said. “We’ll address them at practice and prep the varsity for their first action (on Dec. 10). We have numerous battle-tested wrestlers in the lineup who are ready to kick off the season. We are excited to see what this team is capable of.”
Two champs at Canton South Open Tournament
A group of Holmes Area Wrestling Club Elementary Attack Team wrestlers took advantage of getting some competition before the season begins, competing at the Canton South Open Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Canton South High School.
Rowand Mathie and Julian Morehouse, both sixth graders, snared gold medal honors, while silver medals were awarded to Chansen Hart (fourth), Briggs Patterson (fifth) and Graham Mathie (second).
