Bolivar Village Council held two executive sessions during a special meeting June 17. The purpose of the meeting was to interview and appoint a council member to a vacant seat and to interview candidates for police chief.

Council appointed Curtis Strauss to fill the vacant seat of Will Bellinger, effective immediately. President Pro Tem Tim White administered the oath of office, and Strauss took his seat on council.

Following the second executive session, Solicitor Stephen Babik introduced an ordinance, as an emergency measure, to hire Chad Hilty as Bolivar police chief. Hilty replaces Randy Haugh, who was recently hired as police chief in Strasburg. Council unanimously approved the ordinance. Council member Loretta Diveley was absent. Hilty will receive $26 per hour for a 40-hour work week, effective June 17. Mayor Robert Lloyd administered the oath of office.

Babik and Village Administrator Patty Smith conducted the scoring of candidates for the police chief position.

“I want to thank both applicants for their time,” Lloyd said. “It was a difficult decision as both had similar qualifications for police chief.”

The next regular council meeting will be July 3 at 7 p.m. at 121 Canal St. SE in Bolivar.
