Christine Pierpoint to retire from Sugarcreek Library

Christine Pierpoint, the Sugarcreek Branch Library manager, is retiring, effective Dec. 31. She announced her retirement at the Sugarcreek Council meeting.

                        

Sugarcreek Council awarded a bid at the Oct. 2 meeting to Tim Immel Construction of Sugarcreek for a 1,344-foot expansion at the sewer plant garage at a low bid of $209,000. Two higher bids also were submitted.

In another matter the Boston Street storm drain project will begin after the surveyors complete their work on Oct. 16, and the storm drain project will begin Oct. 23. The bid was awarded to Bachtel of Massillon to complete the project at a total cost of $141,650.

Christine Pierpoint, manger of the Sugarcreek Library, informed council she is retiring, effective Dec. 31, after 10 years managing the library branch. The library had 4,619 visitors to date, 322 computer sessions, 983 in program attendance and 241 in the summer reading program. Wi-Fi also is available.

Council also did the following:

—Awarded a project to Tand G of New Philadelphia to seal cracks in the streets at a cost of $9,585, contingent on if the company has time to complete the work prior to cold weather. Village employees were asked to do the job; however, a street employee has resigned and caused the department not be at full capacity.

—Heard at a previous meeting that council agreed to install no turn on red signs at Dover Road (U.S. 39) and Factory Street Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Village administrator Kevin Kaser said trucks are unable to turn onto Factory Street if traffic is pulled up too far on the street.

—Employed Rick Menges as a part-time police employee for special incentives, training and action with the police dog.

—Gave previous approval to Rachel Tetravat as a member of the fire department.

—Learned a portable diesel fuel tank that was used to fill golf carts developed a leak and was removed by the company supplying the fuel at no cost to the village.

—Denied a request from the Sept. 5 meeting for a liquor license at 118 Main St., citing multiple reasons.

—Heard a request from Zach Haines of the Grace Church at Shanesville to extend its parking lot. The request was referred to a committee for study.

—Held the first reading on seven ordinances and the second reading of an ordinance to enter a contract with the County Public Defenders Commission for 2024.

—Held an executive session to discuss compensation of a public employee. No action was taken.

Other information

Trick or treat will be held Oct. 28 from 2-4 p.m. A traditional fall party will be held at Miller Avenue Elementary at 5 p.m. with costume judging and refreshments. Ragersville trick or treat will be held Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Those wanting to participate in trick or treat should turn on a porch light, and children should be accompanied by an adult.

The community and Ohio Swiss Festival Committee were lauded for a successful 70th Ohio Swiss Festival, which was the largest ever attended. The Garaway sports teams were thanked for helping to clean up the area.

Austin Weaver, a firefighter, was recognized for assisting during the Swiss Festival.

Police Chief Kevin Kaser said the police recently investigated 11 drug cases.

The communication, public relations, refuse, streets, water and sewer committee will meet Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

The next meeting will be held Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in Village Hall, 410 S. Broadway. The finance, personnel and audit committee will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss the 2024 payroll ordinance, followed by the lands, building, sidewalks and insurance committee at 6:30 p.m.
