Mineral City Village Council agreed during its March 13 meeting to allow Fiscal Officer Becky Carpenter to investigate the costs of obtaining a loan to purchase a used brush truck for the fire department.

Fire Chief Sam Moore advised council Feb. 27 that the 2014 truck was available from the Carrollton Fire Department for $40,000. Moore said such a truck would be greatly beneficial to the department, which had to deal with numerous brush fires during the 2024 drought.

At the Feb. 27 council meeting, members voted to purchase the truck using annual funds from Sandy Township and finance the remaining $20,000.

Reports to council

Mayor Laurie Green reported having attended the Tuscarawas County Health Department’s annual meeting, where she learned more about the Healthy Tusc initiative. Green said she will share a more detailed report at the March 27 meeting.

Green also said Tusky Valley will send 10 students to help the village and fire department during its annual Pay It Forward Day in April.

Green reported for the parks and recreation committee, stating Rick Cain, committee chair, will visit Uhrichsville to look at the new basketball courts. Cain also will meet with a company in the coming week to review plans for beginning construction on the new park.

Moore thanked Sandy Township’s road crew for assisting with tree stump removal at the new park site.

In zoning, committee member Terry Nill said he has received reports of chickens being raised on a property inside the village limits and will investigate.

Nill also reported for the Friends of the Library, saying the King of Hearts fundraiser jackpot currently stands at $1,155. Tickets can be purchased at the library for drawings, which take place each Friday at 5 p.m.

Nill said Library Director Carrie Moore has contacted someone from the TUFF Bags project, which supplies backpacks with food for nearly 2,000 children in Tuscarawas County. According to Nill, the organization will be at the library once a week from June 13 through Aug. 8 distributing backpacks.

Council seat still vacant

Green issued a reminder that there is still an open seat on village council. Anyone interested in being appointed to serve on council should submit a letter of interest to the attention of Mayor Laurie Green, Village Hall, P.O. Box 336, Mineral City.

Those interested also may call 330-859-2222 or email interest through the village website at www.mineralcityoh.org. Candidates must live within the village corporation limits.

Mineral City Council meets the second and fourth Thursday each month at 5 p.m. at Village Hall. All meetings are open to the public.
