Mental health author to speak at NAMI event
Pete Earley will be the keynote speaker at the annual gathering for NAMI Wayne and Holmes Counties on Aug. 25.
Best known for his book, “CRAZY: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness,” Earley was one of two finalists for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize. His book has won awards from the American Psychiatric Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health America and prompted CNN to name him one of the nation’s top “Mental Wellness Warriors.”
Earley has testified five times before the U.S. Congress about the need for mental health reform and has spoken in 49 states and five foreign countries. He serves on a mental health advisory panel that advises Congress, writes a weekly mental health blog and is a regular contributor to The Washington Post editorial page about mental health issues. He is the author of 21 books including five national best sellers.
In a Washingtonian Magazine cover story titled “Top Journalists: Washington’s Media Elite,” Earley was described as one of a handful of journalists in America who has the power to introduce new ideas and give them currency.

At NAMI’s annual gathering, there also will be an awards presentation for members who have made significant contributions to the local organization and the MOCA House Recovery Program. In addition, the Crisis Intervention Team Police Officer of the Year will be awarded. The event is centered on “The Road to Recovery.”
