Millersburg Council discusses adding extra pickleball courts
Millersburg Village Council held a regular council meeting on May 22.
Millersburg Police Chief Matt Shaner said on May 19 a part-time officer was involved in a minor traffic crash on South Washington Street. He was driving the 2015 police cruiser, which sustained minor damage. Shaner said the officer was not at fault and the department would likely not be repairing the minor damage to the cruiser.
Shaner also said Kristopher Jones, the department’s most recent hire, graduated from the academy the previous week and should do his testing soon.
Several other items of note took place during the meeting:
—Village administrator Nate Troyer said preliminary work is happening with the ODOT sidewalk TAP project, and construction should begin soon.
—Troyer said a predemolition meeting was held with Martin Excavating, which will be removing the houses that are part of the demolition project. They are working on asbestos abatement prior to beginning actual demolition.
—Troyer said council had previously discussed installing offset signals at the Glen Drive/South Washington intersection. Greenwich Electric will order the equipment and complete the installation. The signals will be for the north and southbound lanes.
—Troyer said he’s awaiting documents from Kimble to proceed with the piggyback option with the Village of Sugarcreek contract.
—Troyer said Holmes County commissioners would like council to consider unrestricting the right turn on red on South Monroe Street onto East Jackson Street. It is currently restricted to turn right on red Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Because visibility to the west is very good at the intersection, the commissioners would like council to consider removing the restriction altogether. Troyer said he has no issue with covering up the sign on a trial basis. Council then voted 6-0 in favor of a motion to cover the right turn on red restriction sign on South Monroe Street to East Jackson Street on a trial basis.
—Council approved a resolution determining to proceed with the submission to the electors of the question of levying a tax more than the 10-mill limitation.
—Mayor Jeff Huebner said he has been approached by many community members requesting that additional pickleball courts be installed. He has asked Troyer to investigate the cost of adding two additional courts and possibly more in the future. Shaffer said from a budgeting perspective, time is of the essence as the 2024 budget is nearly complete. Councilman Brad Conn said perhaps federal grant money could be applied for and used for the addition of more courts. As a reminder to the public, while the fencing around the courts is being upgraded in the near future, the pickleball courts will be closed.
