Meals on Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties is asking individuals to make the most of this summer by volunteering as delivery drivers.

The agency depends on at least 65 volunteers each day to deliver more than 1,600 meals to nutritionally at-risk individuals throughout Stark and Wayne counties. The agency is always in need of more volunteer drivers, and the summer season is the perfect time for new or returning volunteers to pick up a route.

“This is a great opportunity for people who want to volunteer but do not typically have the time. Delivering meals is a simple and fulfilling way to go the extra mile this summer,” said Anngi Klick, volunteer coordinator. “The best part is deliveries only take about 60-90 minutes, so volunteers still have plenty of time to kick back, relax and enjoy their summer vacations while still giving back to their communities.”

The agency asks school faculty and staff members to consider volunteering during this time. It also encourages students to ride along with parents or grandparents who volunteer and experience firsthand the value of service before self.

It is especially important that Meals on Wheels finds volunteers now as the need for its services increases. The agency is serving 200 more meals per day than it was at this time last year and expects to continue growing. In order to keep up with the need, Meals on Wheels must find more volunteers.

Volunteers can choose the location and days that are most convenient with their schedules. Drivers must be licensed and have auto insurance coverage. Deliveries are made between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. The agency provides volunteers with training and mileage reimbursement.

Meals on Wheels welcomes those who would like to become regular drivers or occasional substitute drivers. There also is an Adopt-A-Route program that allows companies to deliver in the community through an employee-rotation schedule.
