Millersburg Village Council held a regular council meeting on June 12.

Several items of note took place during the meeting.

No turn on red at South Monroe and East Jackson streets

Councilman Robert Shoemaker expressed concern that even with right turns being allowed on red at the intersection of South Monroe and East Jackson streets, drivers will still use the parking lot of the OSU Extension to avoid that intersection. Mayor Jeff Huebner said since the parking lot has been reconfigured and trees have been planted there along Monroe Street, drivers will not be able to cut through there as they have been for the past several years.

MPD officers recognized

Police Chief Matt Shaner recognized several of the village’s patrol officers for their efforts during two structure fires in the village.

On May 26 Dustin Badertscher, a recently hired patrol officer, was first on the scene of a structure fire. Shaner said Badertscher, without hesitation, moved a fire victim a safe distance away.

Shaner said Caleb Cox, a newly certified officer, and Kris Jones, a recent graduate from the academy, then arrived on the scene and checked the area for other victims. Jones then administered first aid and oxygen to the fire victim.

On June 4 another structure fire occurred. Shaner said patrol officer Stephanie Genet, working solo, did an excellent job handling traffic control without needing additional assistance.

Then the next day, that same structure fire rekindled during busy afternoon traffic. Shaner said Genet and Cox handled traffic control very effectively.

Amphitheater dedication

A dedication for the Deer Park Run amphitheater was held June 10. During the dedication someone asked how to reserve the amphitheater. To reserve the amphitheater at Deer Run Park in Millersburg, village administrative assistant Mary Shaffer should be contacted.

Shoemaker voiced concern that the gravel on the steps of the amphitheater could pose a risk for falls. Huebner agreed this needs to be discussed further.

Letter from Volunteer Guardianship of Holmes County

A letter from Pamela Maxfield-Ontko, coordinator of the Volunteer Guardianship Program of Holmes County, was distributed to council members. The letter thanked council for approving and supporting the proposed indigent burial site at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Emergency notification system

Councilwoman Kelly Hoffee questioned why the village’s notification system wasn’t utilized in early June during the emergencies in the village that resulted in closed streets. It was deemed to be an oversight. The notification system isn’t utilized often, so it was overlooked during the recent street closures.

Rezoning request

The planning and zoning commission recommended the approval of a rezoning request for 138 N. Mad Anthony St. to allow the construction of a duplex (R-3 to SU). A public hearing about the request was set for Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Legislation

Council approved an ordinance updating the ordinance regulating the use of the Holmes County Trail and declaring an emergency.
