Nixie M. Johnston, age 99 of Smithville and formerly of Marshallville, died Monday, May 21, 2018, at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster, following a period of declining health.

Nixie was born on Nov. 27, 1918, in Maryville, Tennessee to the late Benjamin H. and Laura “Irene” (Lillard) Norris and graduated from Doylestown High School. She married Donald H. Johnston on Feb. 27, 1937, in West Virginia. Donald died in 1997.

Nixie worked at Marshallville Equity and Morton Salt for many years and then as an LPN for Dr. Harry Pappas in Wadsworth for 11 years, retiring in 1980.

Nixie was a member of Smithville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed square dancing, bowling, canning, making crafts and especially loved playing card games.

Surviving are two daughters, Nixie Pauline (Tom) Bonadio of Bradenton, Florida and Brenda Marie Johnston of Smithville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Nixie was preceded in death by her son, Roland Edward “Butch” Johnston; infant son, Donald Johnston; and sisters, Ruth Geiser and Etholeen M. Allenbaugh.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 at Auble Funeral Home, 512 E. Oak St., Orrville, with Pastor Todd Martin officiating. Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Marshallville.

Friends may call on Saturday at the funeral home from 2-3 p.m., prior to the service.
