Park school building sale finalized
The Claymont City School District Board of Education announced it has sold the Park Elementary School building, located at 200 Jewett Ave. in Dennison.
Park Elementary was built in 1912 and served the district’s students for 109 years. In more recent times, it housed the district’s preschool students. However, in view of the advanced age of the building, and the shrinking number of students enrolled in the district, the preschool program was consolidated and moved to Claymont Primary School.
Park Elementary has been mostly empty since the close of last school year. This past summer, the board determined it would explore the possibility of selling the building.
To sell a school building, Ohio law requires a board of education to first place the building up for public auction. The board made an announcement in Newell Reality in August 2021 that it would hold a public auction for Park Elementary.
On Sept. 9 the public auction was held on the property of Park Elementary. The highest bid that the board received was $82,500. The board accepted the offer at a special board meeting held that same day. Official closing on the sale of the property occurred on Oct. 6.
In accordance with Ohio law, the proceeds from the sale of Park Elementary are now in the district’s Permanent Improvement Fund, which can be used for the purchase of property, assets, or improvements with an estimated life or usefulness of five years or more.
