In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week that date as Police Week.
The Light Ohio Blue campaign coincides with activities associated with Police Week. This year’s dates are May 11-16. There will be numerous events held in Washington, D.C. this year, like the candlelight vigil, the National Police K9 Memorial Service, the wreath ceremony and the Stand Watch for the Fallen. Many activities are returning to prepandemic levels.
Tuscora Lodge #4 is asking members of FOP Tuscora Lodge #4 and local law enforcement to wear a black or black/blue band over their badge for the entire week, symbolizing their fallen brothers and sisters.
Everett said, “We encourage citizens who have a flag at home or at a business to lower the flag to half-staff on Sunday, May 15; this is in remembrance of any law-enforcement officer who has sacrificed his or her life in the line of duty and paid the ultimate price.”
There were 617 law-enforcement officer deaths in 2021, although most of them were due to COVID-19.
“We remember those who have paid the ultimate price protecting others,” Everett said. “We hope this recognition can serve as a turning point to those who strive to keep our communities safe and are kept safe themselves.”
Businesses and residents in Tuscarawas County are encouraged to show their support for law-enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and for those currently serving and retired.

—Place a blue bulb on your exterior porch light or garage lights.
—Wrap blue Christmas lights around your home or business.
—Light up your entire home or business with blue floodlights.
—Place blue ribbons on your mailbox, nearby columns or posts.
—Wear blue on May 15.
—Tell your friends, family and neighbors what you’re doing and post a picture to social media using #LightOhioBlue.
