Sugarcreek Council preps resolution on food truck
At the April 21 council meeting, Sugarcreek Solicitor Dough Frautschy said under the village’s zoning code, the zoning inspector has the authority to waive fees for events authorized by the village.
In response Council President Pro Tem Kevin Hamsher recommended drafting a resolution to formally address those events and avoid confusion regarding food truck fee requirements. Frautschy will prepare the resolution for council to consider at the May 5 meeting.
At the April 7 meeting, council had approved a $50 annual fee for food trucks participating in events, with an exemption for nonprofit organizations.
In other business Village Administrator Kevin Kaser said the traffic light at Edelweiss Drive and U.S. Route 39 needs to be repaired or replaced at an estimated cost of $900. Council accepted a quote from TC Randall Construction for $9,253 to install a battery backup system at the traffic light on Factory Street and U.S. Route 39. The backup system was approved in 2024.
Council approved a request from residents of Maple Street to close the street on Sunday, June 1 from 3-5 p.m. for a block party, provided street construction has not begun. The brick street is scheduled for replacement in June.
The bed tax committee met April 15 to review five grant applications. The committee recommended funding two grants in full, partially funding two others and denying one. Council approved a total of $12,000 in grant funding. Recipients were not named.
The safety committee met at the fire station before the council meeting to examine the ambulance cot system. Council agreed to enter into a service contract with Stryker at a cost of $955 per year.
Temporary repairs were made April 21 to a waterline previously used to supply Belden Plant No. 9 on East Main Street. The line had been shut off about five years ago. On April 23 water was shut off for approximately two hours to complete additional repairs.
Council heard repairs to McDonald Drive are expected to cost about $7,280. Following a street, water and sewer committee meeting, council instructed Kaser to contact AEP about installing a streetlight at the entrance to Heritage Crossing.
Council also recognized Fiscal Officer Connie Goddard, Village Administrator Kevin Kaser and the police chief as designees authorized to continue public records and policy training on behalf of council members.
The first reading was held for an ordinance authorizing participation in the Ohio Department of Transportation road salt contracts to be awarded in 2025. With two council members absent, the ordinance could not be passed as an emergency.
The first reading also was held for vacating an unopened alley near Bahler Street.
Council discussed a request from school officials to undertake another sidewalk improvement project using the village’s 50/50 sidewalk program. Kaser said the district had not followed the program’s rules during the last project. While an exception was made at the time, he said it was a one-time allowance. Council agreed the rules must be followed for the district to remain eligible for funding. The school treasurer will be contacted.
Painting has begun at the pickleball courts and is expected to be completed by the end of the week. The fence installation is scheduled April 28.
The April 10 fire department chicken barbecue and auction was reported as a success.
The next council meeting will be May 5 at 7 p.m. The street, water and sewer committee will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss sewer relining on Hillside Drive. Both meetings will take place at 410 S. Broadway in Sugarcreek.
