Orrville Public Library’s children’s department will read all summer long.

Pete the Cat will be the star of the Puppet Show in July. He’ll also appear, bigger than life, at a special Pete the Cat program on Aug. 2.

Young readers can rock their summer by contributing to the Libraries Rock! School Supply Drive. The library is collecting packs of 10 pencils for Orrville Salvation Army.

The library will celebrate the Opening Day Festival on Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. Cotton candy, popcorn, balloons and games will be available for all. Bring your camera as there will be a fire truck, police car and heavy equipment to view. Jeff Brediger from Orrville Utilities will bring his kite safety presentation, and costumed book characters will be around every corner.

Opening Day is a great time for children who have finished kindergarten through grade five to register for the Summer Reading Program. They may earn prizes by reading books this summer. Preschoolers may register for Summer Storytimes, Father’s Day Storytimes and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.

July will feature the Brick Builders and Puppet Show. August will host the Ice Cream Social, Kindergarten Storytime and a back-to-school story program of tall tales with the Maupins.

Adults age 18 and over also can win prizes by reading this summer. Attend the Opening Day Festival for a chance to win a prize just for signing up. Prizes throughout the summer will include items like gift cards, gift baskets or tickets to the Akron RubberDucks. Just fill out an entry ticket for each book read from June 1 to Aug. 18. Participants can earn bonus entries for attending an adult program or participating in the back-to-school donation drive.

The Young Adult Summer Reading Program for grade 7-12 will feature Book Bingo. Each bingo offers participants the chance to pick from a wide variety of prizes. Winners will be drawn at the end of the Summer Reading Program for a grand prize as well. All of the Summer Reading Assignment books also will be available, and they count toward bingo too.

Summer Storytimes will soon start at Orrville Public Library. A variety of time slots are offered for children age 9 months to 5 years. The programs give children an introduction to the wonderful world of books, finger plays, songs, games and age-appropriate crafts.

A special art program, Art in the Afternoon, is designed to encourage children in kindergarten, first grade and second grade to explore art and books.

Registration began Wednesday, May 30. Storytimes will begin the week of June 18 and end Aug. 7. Due to the Fourth of July, there will be no Storytime the week of July 2. Call 330-683-1065 to register. Class sizes are limited.

Numerous sessions will be offered. The same material is repeated in some sessions, so children should register for only one time slot. For information concerning sessions and times, call the library at 330-683-1065.
