Time to speak up and defend American principles
Letter to the Editor,
On Feb. 24, 2022, we all saw footage of Russian tanks and soldiers moving in to Ukraine and witnessed the brave defense of Ukrainian towns, the massacre at Bucha and the continuing carnage of a nation fighting for its sovereignty. The United States and Europe have provided aid to Ukraine to stop Vladimir Putin and the Russian aggressors. Now we are being told by our newly elected president that, in fact, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is a dictator responsible for starting the war in Ukraine. We Americans have eyes that see and ears that hear, and we are not fools.
We know from documented reporting that Putin and the Russians launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a sovereign European nation, in 2022, after having taken over and occupied parts of it since 2014. Now the president and his State Department officials are cozying up to our longtime enemy Putin and seem to be ready to sacrifice the interests of Ukraine and Europe (our longtime ally) for billions of dollars of economic ties with Russia. In other words we appear to be stepping back from our alliance with the free world and capitulating to a Russian despot.
What message does this send to aggressors when a sovereign nation like Ukraine is invaded without cause by its more powerful neighbor, who is then allowed to keep the territory it seized? Surely this is not a Republican or Democratic issue but one that should concern all Americans who believe in our basic historic principles of fair treatment and justice for all people. The U.S. must ensure Ukrainian interests in any ceasefire agreement with Russia or the world will become a much more dangerous place. It is time for more of us to speak up and defend American principles.
