The University of Akron Wayne College invites area veterans to its sixth annual Veterans Day Luncheon and Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. in the Student Life Building, 1901 Smucker Road, Orrville. The event is free for veterans and a family member, but seating is limited.

The military-style ceremony will include lunch, music and a time to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Representatives will be on hand to share local resources available to veterans including educational benefits available to those who have served. Social time will be from 11-11:30 a.m. with Stair Steps to Wellness providing complimentary chair massages to veterans who arrive early.

A ceremony and lunch will start promptly at 11:30 a.m. Registration is required at wayne.uakron.edu/webforms/rsvp/veterans.dot or by calling 330-684-8973.

University of Akron alumnus Ernest Stadvec will provide the keynote address. Stadvec earned a B.A. in political science in 1950 on the G.I. Bill after serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. A participant in UA’s ROTC program and commissioned when graduated, Stadvec went on to serve as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and later served in the Air Force Reserve.

Stadvec spent 18 years on active and reserve status with the Army Air Corps and Air Force, leaving with the rank of first lieutenant.

During his years at UA, Stadvec played both baseball and football. In 2012 he was inducted into the University of Akron’s Varsity “A” Sports Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Mike Krino Varsity “A” Achievement Award.

“Wayne College is very excited to have our veterans on campus,” Wayne College dean Jarrod Tudor said. “We are committed to remaining a comfortable place for our veterans to attend college during and after a veteran’s service to our country.”
