Letter to the Editor:

Why am I voting in favor of the New Philadelphia City Schools bond issue when I will retire in a couple of years and have no children or grandchildren in the school system?

First, I’m a graduate of New Philadelphia High School and so are our three children. I want what’s best for our community. Secondly, while in fourth grade I attended the “old” South school. One day part of the plaster ceiling fell down on our teacher, Miss Korns. The community recognized it was better to build a new school instead of continually repairing the existing one, and the “new” South Elementary was built in 1974.

Fast forward many years. I’m now a fourth-grade teacher at East Elementary. Coincidentally part of the ceiling in my classroom came down a few years ago. Fortunately it was ceiling tiles and not plaster. No one was injured, as it happened when school wasn’t in session.

The school’s maintenance/custodial staff does a great job maintaining our aging facilities, but we have the opportunity to pay it forward like our community did almost 50 years ago and build safe, new buildings for our present and future students.

That’s why I’m voting for Quaker pride, safety and paying it forward. Please join with me and vote for the bond issue (Issue 4) on the March 17 primary election ballot.
