Wylie Fuqua is only 14 years old, but he’s already a “big man on campus” at Wooster High School. Based on his accomplishments during the 2023-24 school year, the sky’s the limit for the football and track athlete.

Fuqua, representing Edgewood Middle School, won the discus championship and placed second in the shot put in the OHSAA Middle School State Track and Field Championship, hosted by Hilliard Darby on May 11.

Eighth-graders in the Wooster District attend Wooster High School, but the middle school state meet is for seventh- and eighth-graders, and Edgewood was represented by five athletes.

Fuqua broke his own Edgewood school records at the state meet with a gold-medal discus toss of 188-4 and a runner-up shot put heave of 55-9 1/2.

“Wylie has put in a great deal of work, and we’re extremely proud of him,” his dad Will Fuqua said. “Wylie is 6-foot-4 and weighs 265 pounds. Through hard work he lost weight and trimmed down.”

Fuqua was a two-way lineman on Edgewood’s Ohio Cardinal Conference championship eighth-grade football team in the fall.

Edgewood had four other track athletes qualify for the state meet.

Ella Wirth was the state champion in the seated shot put while Lilly Timko placed eighth in the high jump. Teagan Hafner placed 11th in the 200 hurdles and 15th in the 100 hurdles.

Afton Karazsia was a state qualifier in pole vault.
