At its May 12 meeting, Zoar Village Council approved a final request for bids for fire protection as presented by safety committee chair Tom Klingaman. Councilwoman Judy Meiser abstained from the vote.

Other council reports

Fiscal officer Patty Smith asked council to consider two levies that will be put forth to voters, one a police levy and the other a general revenue levy. The question to be considered was whether to make them renewal or replacement levies, particularly considering the effect of COVID-19 on the economy.

Gail Potelicki was in favor of asking for a renewal only, as was Meiser. “We need to consider our residents and not cause them additional financial hardship,” Meiser said. “We should ask for renewals, not replacements, and be good stewards with that money.”

Attorney Doug Frautschy will review language and make recommendations before council makes a decision in June.

Street commissioner David Irwin reported he had patched holes in two alleys and cut up and hauled away the dead trees on Michael Lane. Council approved $300 to pay for gravel Irwin requested for the cemetery.

Mayor Scott Gordon reported a public hearing originally scheduled for April 4 regarding ordinance revisions will be moved to the June 9 meeting of council at 6 p.m. in Town Hall.

Gordon reported tree removal had begun at the Zoar School House and work will commence on Hess Mill, as well as clean-up of downed limbs in the cemetery.

Gordon also announced the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had sent out notices of a scheduled teleconference to take place May 18 at 3 p.m. and that levee repair work will start at the pump station on May 25.
