Post 192 hosting Memorial Day events in Millersburg
Every year the nation sets aside a day to honor its service members both past and present during Memorial Day, and this year there will be ample opportunity to join in American Legion Post 192’s effort to honor veterans everywhere.
Members of the American Legion Holmes Post 192 announced plans for the annual Memorial Day event May 26. According to Post Cmdr. Craig Lawhead, the Memorial Day events will include the following:
The Color Guard and firing squad of Post 192 will meet at the post home at 8 a.m. and proceed to Clay Street Park to honor the grave of Peter Meyers, hero of three wars. This service will take place at 8:15 a.m. The squad will then proceed to the Veterans Memorial at 8:30 a.m.
The color guard, firing squad and all veterans will gather at the Holmes County Courthouse at 9 a.m. to march to Oak Hill Cemetery. Units for the parade will form, in order, from color guard to West Holmes High School marching band, firing squad, persons in uniform, veterans of all wars, Girl Scouts of America, Boy Scouts of America and Cub Scouts.
The parade will proceed to Oak Hill Cemetery. The WHHS marching band will open with the national anthem, followed by Lawhead, master of ceremonies, giving the welcome address and introducing guest speaker Randy Ruhl, retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Army.
Following Ruhl’s address, Lawhead will place a wreath honoring fallen heroes of all wars. The firing squad will fire the salute, followed by the playing of taps. The service will then conclude with a benediction from Post 192 Chaplain Dave Crider.
The color guard, firing squad and veterans will then travel to Fryburg Cemetery for a short ceremony at 10:15 a.m. The entourage will then head to Berlin Cemetery and will be joined by Hiland High School marching band for services beginning at 11 a.m., where Ruhl will once again serve as the guest speaker.
The firing squad and all veterans will meet in the parking lot of First Baptist Church at the square in Berlin at 10:45 a.m.
Lawhead invites all citizens of all ages to participate in the Memorial Day services and asks that American flags be displayed by all citizens and businesses on this special day.
