Master candle carver and mall show promoter Harold Shively of Berlin spoke to the Tuscarawas County Art Guild at its March meeting, detailing the aspects of setting up an attractive show tent or art venue. He stressed the need to have sturdy, covered display panels; visible price tags on the artwork; and a professional looking name plaque that doesn’t overwhelm the site. With his necessary rules and display skills, Shively became a nationwide mall show promoter. Guild President Bill Koch of Dennison discussed future plans for the organization’s November art show, art scholarship raffle and the invitation of outside artists for a juried show. The guild’s show schedule begins with the Dover Public Library. A rotating art display will run from May through July. The guild artists will show and sell at the Breitenbach Winery’s Dandelion Festival, Saturday, May 7; the Harry Clever Airport Fly-In, Sunday, May 8; and the Saturday, July 9 annual Canal Dover Association Canoe & Kayak Race, which will be expanded into the afternoon with live music and food vendor, with the addition of more space available along the river bank. The group will also display at the Zoar Harvest Festival, Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sunday, Aug. 7. The Tuesday, April 19 meeting will feature local artist Jayne Swartzwelder, who will instruct artists on how to paint on sea grape leaves. The organization is open to all visual artists and photographers of any skill level working in any medium and meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts located at 461 Robinson Drive SE in New Philadelphia.
