Bend a little, help a lot, Feb. 6

Bending, stretching, moving and learning never sounded so good. Not when they’re paired up with raising money for cancer research, anyway. On Saturday, Feb. 6, The Studio on Liberty will be sponsoring their second Bend-efit, the motto being, bending a little and helping a lot. Combined with the Liberty Commons, the day will feature yoga, pilates, tai chi, spinning, children creative movement, polarity therapy, nutrition and wellness lectures, self defense, Tae Bo, sculpting and boot camp. And if wellness and awareness are the overall themes of the day, then inclusion is certainly the sensitive backdrop. Tracy Heck, instructor, designed the day with diversity in mind. She explained that she wanted everyone to have the opportunity to try the activities, so the fees for participating will be a donation of the participant’s choice. Heck owns the studio along with her husband. She lost her uncle to cancer, and was subsequently inspired to do something in his memory. Her unique status as a physical therapist and an instructor allowed her to develop a day to raise money and get people moving. “I wanted to do something for my uncle’s memory. I wanted it to be positive, I wanted people to have fun and I wanted people to think of their health,” Heck explained. “I think all of us, just like me, have been touched by cancer.” On top of the activities, there will be door prizes that people can win via the purchase of raffle tickets. Some examples include a homemade corn hole set, gift certificates and a night at a bed and breakfast. Snacks and water will also be provided for participants. Stretching beyond the exercise and delving into a more personal element will be beaded bracelets that participants can take home in memory of a lost loved one. They will be available for a donation of $2. “It’s fun, and there’s a lot to learn. If you wanted to do a spinning class, if you’ve never done a spinning class, it’s an opportunity to experience it. Or a yoga class or a pilates (class). It’s a way to experience what they are and also give back at the same time,” Heck continued. Furthermore, when Heck last held the event, they raised $5,000. Pleased by the turnout, she decided to make it a once every other year affair. “There’s something for everybody. If you don’t like pilates or yoga, or what we do have there, you can still participate in the day and do something fun,” Heck concluded. The Bend-efit will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and registration is required. To register and see the calendar of activities, visit the Web site at www.thestudioonlib erty.com.
