The Better Together Bash will be held Thursday, Nov. 7 at Tuscarawas County Central Catholic High School in New Philadelphia. This is the second year for this event.

“The Better Together Bash was created to celebrate the accomplishments of individuals with developmental disabilities and the many people in the community who help to make our community an even better place for individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Nate Kamban, superintendent of the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities and a member of the Better Together Committee.

Everyone is invited to dine, dance and celebrate at the event, which will be from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. The menu is homemade lasagna, tossed salad, Italian bread, Litty’s cake and assorted beverages. Carryout will be available.

Kamban said the meal is special because of the many donations received from the community and the many volunteers including students from Tuscarawas Central Catholic who come together on a weekend to prepare it.

The event is organized by the members of an all-volunteer group, the Better Together Committee. The members meet on their own time to organize the Better Together Bash, which also is a fundraiser for the TuscBDD levy campaign through the purchase of tickets for the event.

“TuscBDD is unable to use any levy or government funding to support our levy campaign; therefore we must fundraise in order to support our levy campaign efforts,” Kamban said. “This event is important because it allows us to celebrate successes and also work to ensure the sustainability of funding for individuals with developmental disabilities in Tuscarawas County.”

The mission of TuscBDD is to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities through quality services and community partnerships.

Nominations were received earlier in the month, and the members of the Better Together Committee and invited members of the community met to decide the winners. The results will be kept secret until announced at the 2019 Better Together Bash.

Last year’s winners were Abby Cool, who won the Diamond Award, which is for a person with disabilities in recognition of bravery and efforts to advocate for yourself and on behalf of others to achieve dreams; Erin Peoples, who won the WOW Award in recognition of her ability to educate and challenge students with developmental disabilities to reach their full potential; the New Philadelphia Fire Department, which won the Ripple Effect Award for contributing to the awareness that individuals with disabilities are crucial members of the workforce and are able to make an impact in a specific workplace and throughout the community; Nancy Hunter, who won the Ruth Carlson Hope Award in recognition of her dedication as a professional in the field of developmental disabilities and has made an impact; and Coney DiGenova, who won the Standing Ovation Award for a parent, guardian or sibling who has advocated for a loved one with a developmental disability.

“We had an excellent response from last year’s event. Many individuals served; their families and community members attended the event,” Kamban said. “We were so thankful with the great support that we received from the community. The dance at the end of the night was a total blast, and the dance floor was packed.”

Tickets are available at any TuscBDD location; the Service and Support Center and Starlight School, both on the south side of New Philadelphia; or Charmed: Gifts with Meaning, 117 W. High Ave., downtown New Philadelphia.
