Members of the Wooster Township Fire and Rescue Association, along with family, friends, community members and students, will gather before first daylight at Triway Local Schools’ new building at 3205 Shreve Road in Wooster on Saturday, March 1 to begin preparations for its annual Pancake Day fundraiser. The all-day feast will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $5 presale and $6 at the door, and kids under 8 eat free. The drive-thru will be available again this year. Signs will be posted to route cars to the back of the new school building for pickup.

Tickets for a cash raffle are $1 per ticket or $5 for six. Pancake or raffle tickets may be purchased prior to the event from any WTFRA firefighter or at the door. The winner need not be present to win.

To find the event at the new building, enter through the main doors to the middle/high school. There will be signs to help people navigate parking, entering and where to go once inside.

This year marks the 39th annual Pancake Day, the department’s only fundraiser. Approximately 100 volunteers pitch in to make the day a success. The traditional menu remains the same: all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, applesauce, and a choice of white milk, chocolate milk, orange juice, coffee or water. The secret pancake recipe hasn’t changed in 38 years.

In addition to the breakfast, Clinton Township Fire and Rescue will sell green reflective address signs, and the local Girl Scout troop will sell cookies. Smoke detectors will be available to purchase at a minimal cost. Fire prevention materials relating to smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, home safety checklists and home escape plans will be on hand, as well as coloring books and crayons. Weather and parking availability permitting, there will be trucks available for everyone to see.

“Funds are always used to help purchase equipment for the fire department that otherwise might not be able to be purchased with tax dollars because of the cost,” WTFD Chief Dallas Terrell said.

In the past four years, this has translated to over $100,000 worth of needed equipment that the department was able to purchase to keep the firefighters safe and the department updated. This year funds raised will be used to replace obsolete and out-of-service thermal imaging cameras that are located on the fire engines. WTFD also will be able to replace individual SCBAs, a breathing apparatus that is worn by firefighters.

“This event is without a doubt our community’s largest annual gathering,” Terrell said. “People come to this event to see and talk to people that they haven’t seen since last year’s event. In addition to the locals, we routinely get people from out of town who are passing through the area and saw the signs, in town for an event, or friends and families of the volunteers and come to show their support.”

WTFD is always looking for individuals interested in volunteering for the community as a firefighter/EMT. The department covers 100% of equipment and training for those accepted.
