Colors that evoke summer
Just like in fashion, trends dictate how we decorate our homes and patios each spring and summer. With more of us choosing to stay home rather than vacation, creating a space for relaxation and recreation is more important than ever.
Choosing colors that complement our homes and sooth the senses can include following trends or simply deciding what you like and what makes you feel good.
Now more than ever people are decorating outdoor living spaces of all kinds, even little nooks in the yard, from bright fun colors to the soft hues of sky. With people staying home more, these spaces serve as a place to unwind or for entertainment. These special places are an extension of our living well. Outdoor living can benefit our health; this special space is like no other in our everyday lives. It can be, if planned well, that mini vacation for fun and relaxation, said Darlyn Amodio, owner of 2nd Street Interiors at Dover.
This years trends lean toward the beach with blues and white. Sandy browns and other neutrals are reminiscent of the beach and create a vacation feel.
Flea market and estate sale finds can add a vintage flair and are in right now. When combined with new items, the bold contrast can be eclectic and fun. Using vintage items saves money and still reflects a sense of style.
Neutral colors can be combined with nearly every shade and color and make the most sense when decorating our homes and outdoor spaces this summer. From window treatments to area rugs, neutral colors work well in summer to bring out the natural colors found in yards and gardens.
Softly tinted pales or pastels will provide us with a gentle, subtle look. They can also easily be combined with most neutrals and darks. Adding a few pillows in various sizes can dress up an indoor couch or an outdoor chaise. Even the hammock benefits from added pillows or throws.
Combine mid-tone colors with whites for a crisp look, or with taupe-based neutrals for a softer, more comfortable look.
Offbeat colors are drawn from natural sources like vegetables and minerals. They can provide a rustic or sophisticated look, depending on how we choose to incorporate them.
Darks are generally more popular during colder seasons. However, when combined with neutrals like cement, blue-gray, putty, or khaki, they can make a major impact for summer.
Color doesnt have to be found in textiles alone. Add a bouquet of fresh flowers to an end table or side board for an instant shot of color that can easily be changed as flowers fade and moods change.
Candles add color and scent to an environment that can evoke memories and stir the senses. Choose inexpensive dishes for outdoor summer dining. Be bold, mix patterns if you like. Who says stripes and floral dont look good together?
Color can compliment or contrast and still create a look to love. Enjoy the many patterns and colors to choose from. You can delight in the vintage, romantic, beach, floral and stripes. Its all up to you. Find something you love and duplicate it, said Amodio.
