Walnut Hills is preparing to celebrate Holmes County’s senior citizen artisans as part of an upcoming art exhibition.

Dozens of pieces of artwork will be displayed at the “Creativity is Timeless” exhibit on Saturday, Aug. 25 in the Walnut Hills Retirement Home, 4770 Olde Pump St., Walnut Creek, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the exhibit is free.

According to Paula Miller, community relations and marketing director, the event is currently entering its eighth year and has been a huge success as it welcomes artists from the Holmes County area to share their artistic gifts with the public.

“This year we have 44 artists featuring 95 entries, and we have all kinds of beautiful pieces for the public to see,” Miller said. “This is a wonderful way to celebrate the gifts, creativity and talents of our area seniors. It takes a lot of patience and talent to create the way they do, and many of them have been perfecting their skills for decades while others have actually taken up their passion for the arts in recent years, proving that you are never too old to learn talents that can be an inspiration to everyone.”

Visitors to the exhibit will enjoy artwork from a variety of categories including paintings and drawings, photography, quilting, cross-stitch and other soft crafts, woodworking, ceramics, and other hard crafts and miscellaneous arts and crafts items.

All of the artwork was completed by Holmes County area residents who are age 55 and over. In addition those in attendance will be given the task of selecting the recipient of the People’s Choice Award.

“Every year we have people do the voting for the People’s Choice, and every year we hear about how difficult it is to choose just one,” Miller said.

The event also will feature a quartet of area artists who will present demonstrations in their respective fields of expertise.

Kayla DeWitt will present a jewelry-making demonstration, Rob Van Natta will showcase his water color painting techniques, Dee Grossman will demonstrate pottery techniques and Denise DiGeronimo will usher in a unique art form called Pysanki egg decorating. This is a Ukrainian folk art of painting on egg shells. DiGeronimo is a member of the Ohio Egg Artists Guild.

“We try to bring in something new and unique each year for the demonstrations, and these four artists are extremely talented,” Miller said. “Over the past four years that we have done demonstrations, the public has really given us great feedback, and they ask a lot of questions.”

There also will be live music during the event, and both the music and demonstrations will continue through the event.

“I am very excited to see all of the incredible talent our area seniors have, and this is always a wonderful way to connect our seniors with the community and to give them a chance to let their gifts shine,” Miller said. “We have received such a great response for this over the years, and it continues to grow each year.”

While the art will be on display during the event, the seniors will have an added opportunity to have their art shine. Each year Greencroft, Walnut Hills’ parent company, creates a calendar featuring some of the award-winning pieces of art, meaning the seniors’ talents will be seen all year round in the calendar.

“That in itself is a piece of art,” Miller said.

Stop in any time during the show and help Walnut Hills celebrate the creativity and imagination of Holmes County’s senior citizens. For more information call 330-893-3200.
