Local Roots Market & Café in downtown Wooster will host a Drive Electric Earth Day event on April 24. The event is an opportunity to learn more about electric cars, enjoy food and drinks, and meet many partner organizations that will attend.

This is the second annual Drive Electric Earth Day event hosted by Local Roots, with the first event in 2019 and the 2020 event canceled due to the pandemic. At last count there were 26 electric vehicles registered for the event with a collective 659,455 miles driven. It’s an opportunity to learn about the different vehicle models, and some car owners will even offer rides to those interested (with sanitation between rides).

This Earth Day event is about more than cars. It’s also a chance to engage over a dozen businesses and nonprofits setting up booths that day: Schaeffler, Wayne County Sustainable Energy Network, Green Energy Ohio, Wayne Center for the Arts and more. The event will extend into the parking lot of Ride On, to the south of Local Roots, which will have electric bicycles for sale and special discounts for tune-ups.

One locally owned family farm, Adonai Acres, will offer a “Seed Starting with an Emphasis on Seed Saving” class at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. that day. Plus, Local Roots is partnering with Meatheads Union to offer some specials for the event. There also will be kid-friendly activities at some of the booths.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the south parking lot at 140 S. Walnut St. in downtown Wooster. Local Roots will be open regular hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and the Curry Pot will serve traditional foods from its home region of Kerala from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will follow all health department protocols for COVID-19 safety.

For more information on the benefits of driving an electric car and to register for the event, go to the Drive Electric Earth Day website at www.driveelectricearthday.org.
