Fairless High School student Bryce Gregorich introduced Culinary Specialist Submarine Second Class Petty Officer Brock Vassel, who spoke to veterans, families and high school students at the Fairless Local School District’s Veterans Day program.

He spoke about moving back to Ohio from Georgia to be closer to family and become the Navy recruiter based in Canton. He has served in the Navy for six years. He is originally from Mansfield and has been deployed overseas seven times in five years. He served on board an Ohio Class Submarine, the USS Wyoming 742.

“Sacrifice means something. Every person that answers the call to service has sacrificed. It is time away from home and family. I lost my friend in a firearm mishap. He will always be on silent patrol,” Vassel said. “The military acts as one team. We learn respect and learn to treat others with dignity.”

Vassel said when serving in the military, you learn sacrifice, respect and value and you elevate.

The Beach City American Legion Post 549 and Fairless High School junior Shaun Banks, a Boy Scout, posted the colors. Dr. Tammy Bixler-Zalesinsky, assistant principal, gave the welcome. Fairless High School student Luke Buchanan led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the national anthem, led by the high school chorale.

Student Adyson Vetron recognized the veterans, and each branch of the military stood when the chorale sang their song related to their branch of service. Taps was played by members of the high school band. Each veteran received a gift.
